FAQ
Questions about Smyrna Fellowship Trust and how can you help
Smyrna Fellowship Trust serves rural communities in the Nilgiris through education, healthcare, hunger relief, housing, and income generation programs. We work without discrimination, listening to community needs and responding with practical solutions that restore dignity.
The Smyrna Fellowship Trust was established in Ooty on May 29, 1985, by its founding trustees: M. D. Azariah, Selvarajah Nallathambi, Margit Steffanson, and D. Kumaraswamy. As of February 2026, the trust has been operating for 40 years, continuing the humanitarian mission started by the missionaries.
Every donation directly funds education programs, healthcare services, elderly care, housing support, and skill training. We operate with transparency and accountability, ensuring resources reach those who need them most.
Yes. We welcome volunteers in education, healthcare, community outreach, and program support. Your time and skills help expand our reach and deepen our impact in the communities we serve.
You can donate to support specific programs, volunteer your time and expertise, or partner with us on community initiatives. Every contribution, large or small, strengthens our ability to serve with dignity and care.
In 1984, the mission expanded to Ooty, India, where missionaries purchased land named Smyrna Home to serve refugees, people affected by leprosy, and slum communities.
Key figures include Margit, Bennett, and Udayan, as well as the "old building". While many people still say 'Margit', others view Smyrna as a corporate work by the people of God rather than a single individual.
The Trust expanded from Ooty to Kotagiri, Ponnani, and Toda villages, and now sponsors over 400 children. It has moved away from being run by a personality to being an organization run by trustees with collective responsibility and accountability.
Future opportunities include becoming a training center for income generation, establishing a birthing clinic or midwifery services, and creating jobs to become self-sufficient
